Before the Crown: The Untold Story of Song Kang’s Journey to Stardom

Long before he was crowned Netflix’s reigning “Son of Netflix” or capturing global hearts in blockbuster hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon, Song Kang was just a young man trying to figure out his path.

Today, it’s hard to picture the South Korean actor as anything other than a natural-born superstar. Yet, his path from an ordinary student in Suwon to a multi-million-dollar Hallyu icon was shaped by quiet struggles, rejected idol scouting offers, and a relentless dedication to pure acting.

Artistic Roots and Quiet Beginnings

Born on April 23, 1994, in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, Song Kang grew up in an environment touched by the arts. His father was an artistic gymnast, instilling a lifelong appreciation for physical discipline and fitness, while his mother worked as a piano teacher.

Despite growing up surrounded by physical movement and discipline, Song Kang wasn’t instantly struck by the acting bug. As a teenager, he spent his days like many others, focusing on school and navigating his future. However, his striking visuals and natural charisma didn’t go unnoticed.

Turning Down the K-Pop Track

Before ever stepping onto a professional television set, Song Kang reached a major crossroads that many aspiring Korean stars face: the idol route.

As his popularity and looks caught the attention of talent scouts, he received multiple casting offers from various K-pop entertainment agencies. In an era where transitioning from trainee to idol group member is the standard pipeline for young Korean talent, many would have jumped at the chance.

Song Kang, however, turned them down. He realized early on that his true passion wasn’t singing or dancing on stage, but the emotional depth and storytelling of cinema. Choosing artistic authenticity over a guaranteed fast-track to fame, he decided to focus entirely on building a career as a serious actor. He went on to enroll in the Department of Film Arts at Konkuk University—the prestigious alma mater of other top Korean stars like Lee Min-ho and Jin of BTS—to formally study his craft.

The Grind: From Audition Rejections to Namoo Actors

Entering the professional industry is notoriously difficult, and Song Kang’s pre-fame days were defined by the unglamorous grind of countless auditions. He faced his share of early rejections, learning how to handle the heavy pressures of the competitive Korean entertainment market.

His persistence finally paid off in December 2016, when he officially signed with Namoo Actors, a renowned management agency famous for housing elite actors. This signing marked the official turning point, bridging his years as an ambitious film student and his debut as a professional actor.

Taking the First Steps (2017–2018)

Song Kang didn’t instantly achieve overnight stardom; he paid his dues in supporting roles. He made his television debut in 2017 with the tvN romantic-comedy The Liar and His Lover, playing the supporting role of a band member. Later that year, he appeared in the family drama Man in the Kitchen.

To build his public profile and overcome his natural shyness, he also stepped into the variety show spotlight. He tried his hand as a fixed cast member on SBS’s mystery-variety show Village Survival, the Eight and took on the role of a live music show MC for Inkigayo alongside SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu and DIA’s Chaeyeon. These early entertainment gigs showcased his bright, endearing personality, slowly winning over domestic viewers before the global boom hit.

The Breakthrough That Changed Everything

Everything shifted in 2019 when Song Kang beat out an incredible 900 other applicants to land his breakout lead role as Hwang Sun-oh in the Netflix original series Love Alarm. The series became a massive international hit, instantly catapulting him to global recognition and setting the stage for his multi-year reign over streaming platforms.
